Key takeaways
- The best accounts payable software is the one that handles your own invoices and exceptions in a test; no dated 2027 ranking exists yet, so this post checks vendors as of November 2026.
- Treat every automation percentage as a vendor claim: Stampli's page says its agent performs 'on average 89% of the work', which is its own figure.
- Only Tipalti showed starting prices in our check: $99 a month for Accounts Payable, which is $1,188 a year before extras (BufferSol calculation).
- Vendors keep people in the loop: Stampli's page has authorized people 'confirm, correct, and approve' before ERP posting, so test the exception queue, not the demo.
- Build a custom AI agent when your approval rules, ERP and exceptions are specific to you; buy when a suite's standard workflow already fits.
The best accounts payable software in 2027 is the one that processes a sample of your own invoices, exceptions included, and the cheapest way to get it wrong is to make one of three mistakes: trusting a headline automation rate, comparing prices that are not comparable, or never testing the exception queue. Accounts payable software is a system that captures supplier invoices, routes them for approval and pays them. We checked five vendors on their own pages in November 2026.
For the full picture, see our intelligent invoice processing guide. If you are weighing a suite against building, our earlier post on AP automation software vs a custom AI agent covers the trade-off.
Which accounts payable software options are worth a look?
Five vendors are worth a look, each with a different centre of gravity. Everything below is as of November 2026, from each vendor's own pages, and none of those pages showed a publication date. We opened an analyst page for ranking evidence and could not load it, so there is no independent ranking in this post.
| Vendor | What its own page emphasizes (Nov 2026) | Choose it if |
|---|---|---|
| Tipalti | End-to-end automated AP, payment reconciliation, fraud protection | You pay many suppliers, including abroad |
| Stampli | An AI agent that codes, matches and routes with approvals attached | You want AI prepared work with human approval |
| Basware | Invoice lifecycle with explainable, auditable AI and e-invoicing mandates | You run several entities, ERPs or countries |
| BILL | Bill pay, approval routing, ACH and card payments, accounting sync | You are a smaller team that wants simple bill pay |
| Airbase | Spend management bundled with Paylocity's HR platform | You want spend and payroll tools in one place |
One caution on Airbase: the page we opened is mostly about spend management and says little about invoice automation, so treat it as an example of a bundled suite, not an AP specialist.
According to Tipalti's AP page, it offers "fully automated, end-to-end AP processes" and "built-in fraud protection." According to Basware's home page, it says it has been "named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Accounts Payable Applications," which is Basware's own statement, since the Gartner page itself did not load for us.
1. Mistake one: trusting the automation percentage
Treat every automation percentage as a vendor claim until you reproduce it on your invoices. Stampli's home page says "Billy performs on average 89% of the work based on how your business codes, routes, matches, and approves." That is Stampli's figure about its own product, not an independent test, and "the work" is not defined on the page.
What to do instead: ask how the vendor measures "touchless", and run your own sample. Our post on touchless invoice processing shows how to count invoices that finish with no human touch, which is the number that matters.
According to Stampli's Billy page, Billy "checks invoices at the line level and surfaces variances before approval." That is a useful feature to test: send it a short-shipped line and see what it flags.
2. Mistake two: comparing prices that are not comparable
Do not compare a "starting at" price with a quote that has no price. Only one vendor in our check showed figures: Tipalti's pricing page lists Accounts Payable at "Plans starting at $99 /month" and Mass Payments at "Plans starting at $249 /month", with no date on the figures. A BufferSol calculation shows what $99 a month means: $1,188 a year, before any extras (using the listed starting price).
BILL's home page links to "Plans & Pricing" and shows no figures. Stampli and Basware showed no prices on the pages we opened. A starting price is a floor, not a quote, so ask each vendor for a written annual quote that lists:
- fees per user, per invoice and per payment
- implementation and training
- ERP connector or integration fees
- payment fees, such as international transfers
- what happens at renewal
Compare quotes on the same invoice volume and the same ERP, or the numbers mean nothing. A small team with 200 invoices a month and a large one with 20,000 will see very different totals from the same vendor, so state your volume in writing before you ask.
3. Mistake three: never testing the exception queue
Test the invoices that go wrong, because the clean ones work on every platform. The vendors' own pages show people staying in the loop. Stampli's Billy page says "Billy prepares the routine work while authorized people confirm, correct, and approve it before posting to the ERP." Basware says buyers can "set the limits, and ensure every AI action is explainable, auditable, and accountable by design."
Those are sensible designs. The risk is not the AI; it is an exception queue you have not seen. Ask each vendor to process your worst 50 invoices: duplicates, missing POs, split deliveries, changed bank details and foreign-currency bills. Our guide to workflow exception handling explains what a good exception record contains, and our post on invoice approval workflows covers the approval side.
- 011. Pull a sampleTake 100 recent invoices, including your 20 worst.
- 022. Process themHave each vendor run the same sample on your own ERP data.
- 033. Count touchesRecord how many invoices finish with no human touch.
- 044. Read the queueCheck every exception has a written reason and a clear owner.
- 055. Price the yearGet a written annual quote on the same volume.

How do you test AP software on your own invoices?
Follow this sequence with each shortlisted vendor, and write down the result before the sales call:
- Pull 100 recent invoices from your inbox, including the ugly ones.
- Remove nothing. Keep scans, credit notes and foreign-currency bills.
- Run the same sample through each tool, connected to your real ERP.
- Count the invoices that reach "ready to pay" with no human touch.
- Read each exception and check it names the reason and the owner.
- Ask for the audit trail of one invoice from arrival to posting.
An AP tool that cannot show step 6 is not ready for your auditor.
What changes for AP software buyers in 2027?
No analyst or regulator source loaded for this post, so every forward claim here is BufferSol view.
We expect vendors to keep adding AI agents to existing suites, so the label "AI" will tell you less than the exception queue does. We expect e-invoicing mandates to matter more in some markets, but we did not source a timeline, so check your own country's rules. Basware's page says "fiscal and commercial requirements are built into every invoice and update as mandates evolve," which is a vendor claim to verify, not a forecast. Budget for a test in Q1 2027 and sign a contract only after your own invoices have run through it.
When does a custom AI agent beat accounts payable software?
A custom agent beats a suite when the hard part is your rules, not the software's features. Packaged tools are strong at standard flows. A custom agent works inside your own ERP, bank and inbox, and runs your approval rules and tolerances.
Build your own if:
- Your approval chain is unusual. Thresholds, cost centres or project codes do not fit a template.
- You run more than one ERP or entity. The agent reads and posts to each of them.
- Your exceptions are specific. Supplier terms, tolerance rules or contract checks need your logic.
- You want ownership. Prompts, rules and logs stay in your environment, with no per-seat fees.
A custom agent has limits too. It needs clean supplier and PO data, a person to approve exceptions, and someone to own it after launch. It does not replace your AP team's judgement on disputes.
BufferSol's intelligent invoice processing project shows the pattern: it watches the invoices inbox, extracts every field with document AI, matches lines to purchase orders and flags duplicates, routes clean invoices to the approver in Slack and posts to the ERP once approved, with exceptions in a review queue with the reason explained. Our autonomous workflows team builds it around your systems. If you are comparing accounting-wide tools first, read our best accounting automation software post.

What would a 30-day pilot deliver?
A pilot is a working agent on your real invoices inside 30 days. We would plan it like this:
- Week 1: you provide a sample of invoices, your PO and supplier data export, read access to your ERP, and your approval rules.
- Weeks 2 and 3: a prototype reads invoices, matches them and flags exceptions, scored against your sample.
- Week 4: a live pilot on a first slice, such as one supplier group, with every posting approved by your team.
Success is measured by the share of invoices finishing with no human touch, exceptions caught before payment, time from arrival to approval and posting errors. The ready-made version is our invoice processing automation for AP, built for finance teams that key most invoices into their ERP by hand.
Is this right for you?
A custom pilot fits if most of these are true:
- Your team keys or fixes a large share of supplier invoices by hand.
- Your approval rules do not fit a standard template.
- Your ERP exports POs and supplier data you can share.
- A person can approve exceptions each day.
- You tried a suite and its exception queue did not match your rules.
If none of that applies yet, buy a suite and test it on your worst invoices.
Facts checked November 2026. Vendor pages carry no dates and prices change, so re-check each vendor before you sign.
If keying and chasing invoices is costing your team time now, ask BufferSol for a scoped estimate for an AP invoice agent, so the 2027 budget includes it and the pilot can start in Q1 2027.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best accounts payable software in 2027?
No dated 2027 ranking exists yet, and rankings we saw disagreed. As of November 2026, Tipalti, Stampli, Basware, BILL and Airbase each sell AP automation with a different centre of gravity. The best choice is the one that processes a sample of your own invoices, including the messy ones, with a clear approval trail and ERP posting.
How much does accounts payable automation software cost?
Few vendors publish prices. Tipalti's pricing page lists Accounts Payable 'starting at $99 /month' as of November 2026, with no date on the figure. Stampli, Basware and BILL pointed to pricing pages or sales without figures in our check. Ask each vendor for a written annual quote listing fees per user, per invoice, per payment and for implementation.
When does a custom AI agent beat packaged AP software?
A custom AI agent beats packaged AP software when your rules are the difficult part: unusual approval chains, several ERPs, tolerance rules or supplier-specific exceptions. A packaged suite wins when its standard flow fits and you want it live quickly. A custom agent works inside your own systems and keeps its logs in your environment, with no per-seat fees.
Can AP automation approve and pay invoices without a person?
It can, but the vendors we checked keep people in the approval step. Stampli's page says authorized people 'confirm, correct, and approve' the prepared work before posting to the ERP. A safer setup lets the agent handle clean invoices within limits you set and routes the rest to a person with the reason written out.
